Title IX – Sexual Discrimination
What is Title IX?
Title IX is a federal law passed in 1972 that protects people from discrimination based on sex, including sexual harassment and assault, in schools and programs that receive federal funding. This law applies to both students and employees and covers all academic, extracurricular, athletic, and other school district activities.
Title IX States:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
What is Sexual Harassment?
Sexual harassment includes:
- An employee making conditions or benefits dependent on sexual favors (quid pro quo);
- Severe, ongoing, and clearly offensive behavior that denies someone equal access to education; and/or
- Sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, or stalking as defined by federal laws.
